Undergraduate Certificate in Biomedical Data Analytics
This self-contained certificate covers programming, bioinformatics, biostatistics, and machine learning methods with application to analysis of data commonly arising in biomedical, epidemiological, and healthcare disciplines. It equips students with quantitative skills to enhance career prospects and graduate school preparedness. While suitable for anyone with two semesters of calculus (e.g., most science and engineering majors), it is especially beneficial for students in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Neuroscience, and Biomedical Engineering.
The certificate requires 15 semester credit hours (5 courses) and can be completed in four semesters. It is embedded in the Data Analytics Track of BS in Biomedical Sciences degree.
Required Courses:
- STAT 3332 Statistics for Life Sciences or STAT 2332 Introductory Statistics for Life Sciences

Frequently Asked Questions:
Why should I apply for the certificate?
- The certificate will provide training in quantitative skills to enhance career prospects and graduate school preparedness.
How do I apply?
- Go to Apply to UT Dallas and follow instructions under Certificates for Current Students
What is the deadline to apply?
- The certificate can be added anytime. However, the courses need to be taken in a recommended sequence (see above) and not all courses are offered every semester.
I am pursuing Professional Track of BS in Biomedical Sciences degree. Can I take this certificate?
- Yes, provided you have taken two semesters of calculus, equivalent to MATH 2413 or MATH 2417 (with a grade of C- or higher) and MATH 2414 or MATH 2419 (with a grade of C- or higher).
If I am pursuing the Data Analytics track of BS in Biomedical Sciences, will I get the Undergraduate Certificate in Biomedical Data Analytics automatically?
- No. Even though the coursework for the certificate is included in the curriculum, you will have to apply to enroll in the certificate.
Since I am pursuing Data Analytics track of BS in Biomedical Sciences, why should I apply for the certificate?
- You can get the certificate before getting the degree, which may be helpful, e.g., when you are applying for a job or internship.
I am pursuing BS in Data Science. Should I consider applying for the certificate?
- No, your major should provide the needed undergraduate training in Data Analytics. However, if you have room for electives, you may consider taking STAT 3336 Bioinformatics and STAT 3337 Elements of Biostatistics and Epidemiology to broaden your training.
How does the Undergraduate Certificate in Data Science compare with the Undergraduate Certificate in Biomedical Data Analytics?
- Although the two certificates have overlapping curricula, their focus differs. The Data Science certificate offers general training in Data Science, while the Biomedical Data Analytics certificate focuses on tools for analyzing biomedical data.
I have already taken the Undergraduate Certificate in Data Science. Should I consider applying for the Undergraduate Certificate in Biomedical Data Analytics?
- No, the two certificates have overlapping curricula. However, if you have room for electives, you may consider taking STAT 3336 Bioinformatics and STAT 3337 Elements of Biostatistics and Epidemiology to broaden your training.
Can I take all courses in the same semester?
- No, some of the courses from earlier semesters are pre-requisites for courses in later semesters (see the Recommended Sequence above).
Are all the certificate courses offered every semester?
- Not, at present.
I have taken Applied Calculus/Calculus classes before. Will they count as pre-requisites?
- The pre-requisites are two semesters of calculus, equivalent to MATH 2413 or MATH 2417 (with a grade of C- or higher) and MATH 2414 or MATH 2419 (with a grade of C- or higher). There are calculus sequences that are not equivalent to MATH 2413/MATH 2414. For example, the Applied Calculus sequence MATH 1325/MATH 1326 is not equivalent to MATH 2413/MATH 2414 sequence and will not count as the pre-requisites.
If I get this certificate, will I have another degree in addition to my current one?
- No, the certificate is not equivalent to another degree. But there will be an annotation in your transcript regarding the certificate.
If I get this certificate, will it delay my graduation date?
- Taking the courses required for the certificate can delay graduation depending upon when they are taken in your degree plan, but the courses can also be used to satisfy upper-level free elective requirements. Specifics will depend on the degree and when the courses are taken.
